Greetings Curious Scroller,
If you've never landed in this part of cyber space before, you have taken a hard, fast plunge into the fiery depths of work hell. RHU is dedicated to giving the service worker a voice. If you are an angry customer, a corporate suite, a homophobic race-hater, and you don't like skull masks or swear words, this blog isn't for you. Click away now, before your ears bleed and your eyes explode.
I'm Freddy, Crypt Keeper of Retail Hell Underground RHU -- a place for service slaves to have a voice, tell their story, support each other, or just have a chuckle about the insanity of working in the 10th Circle of Hell! I'm also the author of "Retail Hell," the funny memoir about life as a handbag sales associate at an upscale department store! The sequel, "Return To The Big Fancy," has just been released in hardcover and e-reader and is available wherever books are sold!
You can be un-young and un-skinny without being a raging b!tch. The two are not connected.
My wonderful girlfriend is 54 and doesn't have Kate Moss' body type, but I'm head-over-heels in love with her because she's sweet, kind, and helpful. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 = awesome, her personality is about a 15.
I could understand crusty being upset if you were 10 DOLLARS off, but 10 ruddy cents? I'd have just let it pass.

I think you got her on the wrong foot with the SSN- I would not give it to you, either, because why would you need it? It does really seem suspicious.
And when you got the change wrong, I think it was a matter of principle to her.

I agree with the SSN. Since we are taught to jealously guard that number with your very life, that would immediately set off warning flags for me.

Sorry, I'm fat and therefore do not have time to comment.
The buffet's about to close.

As Laughing Barista pointed out, it was her bank asking for her SSN, and if she opened up the account in the last 10 years, she would have definitely had to give it when she opened it. She asked for it because it's a unique identifier.
Posted by: siskaren | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 07:04 AM
Banks typically ask for your SSN, simply because it's easier to remember than tacking on an account number as well. However, while I understand your frustration, the tone you took at the end of the post was just downright rude. Anyone can be in a hurry for any reason that doesn't relate to their age or weight.
Posted by: MA_Nightmare | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 07:18 AM
I totally understand getting upset at the comment - it was uncalled for. I was the victim of a bank teller who made a huge mistake and put our money into someone else's account with the same name - innocent mistake right? NO, the original deposit came with an account card and also my hubby's DL. It is your job to count the money correctly the first time. If it's 10 cents or 10 dollars, that is your job, do it right. Just like it was the teller's job to make sure our account numbers, middle initial, or the address matches when processing a deposit.
Posted by: melmcl | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 07:43 AM
Once (actually twice) at my bank I deposited my check, and somehow they messed it up where they deposited the money so it came out of my acct (it was a my paycheck) do it basically ended like I deposited 0. Anyway the second time this happened I talked to the cashier and told her what happened. I explained the situation and she looked and said "it's ok. Your check was deposited". I explained that yes it was but it was coming out of my acct. she kept telling me I was wrong even though this had happened to me before. She wouldn't even look at my acct after awhile. I ended up getting a manager who looked at it for 2 seconds and realized what had happened. But seriously. This bitch was getting nasty and wouldn't even listen to me because "she knows what she's doing"

The woman's comment was rude but making fun of her weight was uncalled for.
Posted by: Sara | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 09:36 AM
You work at a bank...isnt it your job to be accurate? At my bank, they count out my money clearly in front of me. If you counted out the money in front of her and not just handed her a stack of cash/coins, you would've avoided this mess. Sorry, but it sounds like you're definitely in the wrong here.
Posted by: Boho | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Someone always gets butthurt over any comment towards an asshole customer, one thing I will never understand.
Posted by: Burger Bitch | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:28 AM
I agree that the customer was extremely rude, and also that the original poster was very rude and obnoxious in his/her comments about overweight people (of which I am one...I guess you hate me even though we've never met). But I used to work in a bank, and if I ever made a mistake counting money back, even as little as ten cents, I would have immediately reported the error to my supervisor. Yes it's a small amount, but I always wanted to make sure there was never even the slightest hint of anything improper.
Posted by: Chuckles | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:42 AM
That's why I always try to take a little extra time to make sure I count people's change back correctly, of course I'm the kind of person who kicks herself when making a mistake. I do hate it when custys are impatient and all "RAWR, GIVE ME MY MONEY NOW!!!", I'm going a bit slow so I make sure I give everything back properly!
Posted by: trekkiebabe31 | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I just had a story posted about a woman who made somewhat similar comments to me but you really need to learn how to let that roll off your shoulders. It was uncalled for, but clearly there's something crappy going on in her life that she has to try to make under her breath comments about you. Customers suck, but you have to learn to let it go and rise above it.
I kind of agree with most people here: At a bank, it is absolutely your job to count everything correctly. When I worked at Donut Hell, I counted back everything twice, just to make sure that I had the correct amount. Laziness will make a huge difference. And never mind for the customer, it can fuck up your job. At the end of every shift the head teller usually counts the tills and if you're off, even by ten cents, they will take notice of it. The more you do it, the more likely you will lose your job.
You're paid to be accurate, not kind of accurate.
Posted by: Laughing Barista | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 12:59 PM
I don't even see how her comment was even that rude, and she sounded more flustered than upset.
That said, you don't need to insult her back. Sure it wasn't to her, but it was still rude. What does weight and appearance have to do with personality? Absolutely nothing.
You work in a bank, you should be counting the money out in front of her, and be accurate.
Posted by: candieaddict | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 03:00 PM
Get over yourselves, people! This is a place to rant, as IF you have never thought those things in your head.
Get off your high horse, I'm sure if she called her an anorexic bitch you people wouldn't be down her throats, geeze.
Posted by: Cosmetics Hellhound | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 04:03 PM
So...what...only the OP is allowed to share their opinion, and nobody else? That doesn't seem to add up right.
And calling somebody a fat/anorexic bitch is one thing. Going on a mini-rant about her weight and how apparently the only thing fat people think about is food and that's why all fat people are fat...that's a whole nothing thing. The way it was worded left much to be desired, as it comes out sounding as if the OP holds a certain disdain for ALL fat people. Which is hateful and disrespectful to those of us who have perfectly pleasant attitudes and manners.

whole nother thing*** (stupid fingers)
Posted by: Release_The_Hounds | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 05:01 PM
@ Cosmetics Hellhound - I'm pretty sure people would still be upset if they called her an anorexic bitch. A person's weight does not equal to their personality!
Posted by: candieaddict | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 05:20 PM
You were being nice to try and save her hassle (asking for the SSN) but she was also within her rights to use another form of ID (which you've admitted was an option). And then you give her the wrong change not once but *twice*. I wasn't there and didn't hear her tone but even if she was a raging cow she doesn't deserve to be dismissed as useless to society because of her weight and age... especially not when you caused (or at least exacerbated) the problem in the first place.
@ Cosmetics Hellhound and Burger Bitch - there is no need to jump on someone's weight/appearance/sexual preference (or what you perceive that preference to be)/age/race/etc.. When you do that you're not just kicking that particular custy but every other person on the planet who shares the same characteristics (such as us fat, old people who do have busy lives, what with work, school, family and all). It's lazy as well as insulting. Direct the anger where it belongs - squarely on the particular custy who earn it.
Posted by: Tanz | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 06:10 PM
*Earnt* it, dammit.
Posted by: Tanz | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 06:11 PM
I'm mildly disturbed by this too.
I will say I think she overreacted to the SSN question, but she had the right to refuse to give it out. Especially since anyone can overhear it if you say it outloud. I know that might seem overdramatic, but it really isn't when you consider that there are infants who've had credit cards taken out in their names by identity thieves! However, she shouldn't have been rude in her refusal.
I also don't approve of insulting the intelligence of working people, but I can also understand being a little frustrated in principle by a banker who takes three tries to make correct change. I'm sure it isn't a common thing for you, and you just were having an off day...it sucks that her opinion of you was based on just that, but it is what it is.
Finally, as others have mentioned, insulting her weight and age was just unnecessary. And, yes, I would feel the same way if you'd called her anorexic. I'd actually feel even more strongly, since that's a serious illness being used in the context of an insult.

@ Burger Bitch and Cosmetic Hellhound
This customer was not an asshole. She probably acted like what 90% of people would act like.
1) She didn't count the change back to the customer.
2) She miscounted the change not once...but TWICE.
3)The customer walked away and made one snide comment. She could've went off on her or said something to her face.
4) Finally, she made fun of her weight and age, both of which have a HUGE effect on how people act >_>
Posted by: Boho | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 08:24 PM
Rant points aside, I'm sorry but it is the job of the teller to ensure that money is handled _absolutely_ correctly, _every_ time. That's the whole point of having a bank - that you can trust them with your money.
By your own account you got it wrong, not once, but twice in a row. This is quite unprofessional and no doubt casts a bad reputation for your employer, see point made above.
Yes, it was only a tiny amount, and probably not really important, but any inaccuracy casts real doubt on the ability of the bank (and it's staff to handle money). What is more, I imagine that having the incorrect amount of money at the end of the day will have to be fixed by someone, and cause a headache, most likely for the manager or team leader. Do you really want to called out on that?
Sorry if this seems harsh, but I cannot emphasise enough how important reputation and accuracy is to this industry (I say as a customer).
If your bank can't be trusted to handle small change, how can they be trusted to manage my financial portfolio?
Posted by: Su Chan | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 08:36 PM
Yep, 'cuz every fat person is, like, always stuffing their face with high-calorie nutritionless crap.
Fuck you.
My MEDS made me fat.
Posted by: WMDKitty | Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:35 PM
So you make a mistake and you're butt hurt that she wants to recount it? And then it's shown that you made yet another mistake and you fire off with "fat" and "old"?
How much do you all want to bet this one's going to be a raging fat old bitch in 30 years, on some site kvetching about a young teller who is stupid and made mistakes?
Posted by: hiya | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Sorry, but you suck. Period. If you miscounted my money at a bank, I'd be all over you like Jerry Sandusky majoring in a minor. You really write a rant about not doing the job you're paid to do, getting called out for it, and expect sympathy?
Fuck me. And you more.
Posted by: Terry Everton | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I'm not easily offended and I harbor a serious dislike of the general public but you are way out of line on this one imo. With an attitude like yours I doubt you'll last long in that job. May you reap what you sow.
Posted by: Nihi | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 12:32 PM
This is a place to rant, sure I disagree with the poster, but the fat thing is a bit much. If I wrote a story and described a customer as a "Trailer Trash" looking person, nobody would be like "OMG IM TRAILER TRASH AND IM OFFENDED."
I think everyone just needs to move on.
Posted by: Burger Bitch | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Sorry, I have no sympathy for people who are bad at their jobs yet persist in blaming other people when things go wrong. I imagine most of your customers treat you badly because they can sense the bitch waves radiating off you from across the room, not because they're fatasses.
Here's a hint - even fatasses have better things to do than waste their time with asshats who apparently didn't pass middle school math.
Posted by: shishkani | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 03:49 PM
@BB,
Your insults are totally different. It's always clear that yours are aimed solely at the custy, not that you're making sweeping generalizations about something that's totally unrelated to what happened. And that the custy you describe was being an asshole, not that you're complaining about someone who got frustrated for reasons that are kind of understandable.
Posted by: Chicajojobe | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 05:06 PM
Hmmmm. I'm old and fat. I'm gonna take my big ass junk and bring in the funk! I'm hankering for some deep fried food right now! Now if only I can count. 1...2...3...6...10....43...8 million...
Posted by: Queer Geek | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 08:48 PM
I don't think you all are being particularly fair to the poster, especially if she is new at her job. Yes, the job is to handle money but everyone makes mistakes especially if they are new. Also, I'm sure every person here has made a sweeping generalization about a person at some point or another. Seriously, back off and calm down.
P.S. I'm fat too and i honestly don't care if people think that about me. It hasn't changed anything about me so why should i let it bother me?
Posted by: angie | Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 09:03 PM
As someone who's on the husky side of fluffy, I honestly don't care if she insulted her as fat.
I know I do, and I am!
And besides, no one but the man upstairs is perfect (and no one is perfect if you don't believe in any deity), so is it really necessary to flip a fit over one dime? Unless it's a silver dime, no it's not, IMHO.

I also work at a bank. We don't even have the option of looking someone up by their SSN. We use either a debit card or drivers license. If we are giving cash out they have to have an ID. If they are depositing we can look up by name/address. I get ticked at myself at the end of the day if I'm off by even just 10 cents, because its my job to make sure I give out/take in the right amounts. I know it's rough and I get my fair share of crazies, but when you made the mistake in the first place, you don't have a right to complain when they get upset.

Read a cookbook (new to you) and try the reeicps! You can buy new or used and the library has many titles on offer. Try the smoothie and tea recipe books too.

My view is this: one, the lady got bent for nothing. Hello, when you give your account number we can SEE your social security number on your account. How exactly are you 'guarding' it??
Two, the teller made a simple counting error, which did not justify the nasty comment from the customer.
Third, the teller should have chalked it up to lunacy on the customer's part, but hey, we are human. Having worked in the public all my life I can sincerely say I have said worse, and to customers. One thing I never do is allow a customer to abuse me for any reason.
