Greetings Curious Scroller,
If you've never landed in this part of cyber space before, you have taken a hard, fast plunge into the fiery depths of work hell. RHU is dedicated to giving the service worker a voice. If you are an angry customer, a corporate suite, a homophobic race-hater, and you don't like skull masks or swear words, this blog isn't for you. Click away now, before your ears bleed and your eyes explode.
I'm Freddy, Crypt Keeper of Retail Hell Underground RHU -- a place for service slaves to have a voice, tell their story, support each other, or just have a chuckle about the insanity of working in the 10th Circle of Hell! I'm also the author of "Retail Hell," the funny memoir about life as a handbag sales associate at an upscale department store! The sequel, "Return To The Big Fancy," has just been released in hardcover and e-reader and is available wherever books are sold!
Yay!! I'm so happy for you. Your dog and your job sound wonderful. =) Keep us updated about the lawsuit - I'm looking forward to hearing the tale of your former employers getting smooshed like... I'd say roaches, but that would be insulting to roaches.

You might check with your landlord to see if they'll let you or install door jam armor. My apartments installed on all our doors a couple years back. It's a set of metal plates that go inside the doorjam and reinforces the deadbolt. It took the 4 cops around 10 minutes with a battering ram to knock down my neighbor's door when she was trying to commit suicide.

Yay for getting a dog! And yay for getting a black fluffy one! There is apparently a stigma against black dogs getting adopted - quite possibly the only thing better than a black dog is a black and tan dog (since most of the breeds people associate with protection are black and tan - rotties, dobes, and german shepherds). Dogs are great for warning you when people try to break in (or otherwise be creepy in your yard) too!

Wow! So glad everything is going well.
Tank really does sound awesome. Give him a beer from me, his choice of brand.
Keep us posted on developments, especially regarding the lawsuit.
[Sending good thoughts KareBear's direction] May everything keep going well! You deserve it!

I had a bad incident a few years back with a creeper in my house (bad things), and my BF and I moved because of it. We got special locks, security lights- the works. But it wasn't until I got my awesome dog that I really felt safe. I don't worry about anyone breaking in anymore as long as he's here.
Congrats on the new member of the family, and take care of him and he'll be more than just an alarm system. He'll be your best bud!

Whenever I see tank, I think Janet Evanovich.
I'm REALLY glad they were fired.
If you want to get on the girl's good side, put a few flowers on her desk in a vase with a note thanking her for helping you. You will immediately know whether she likes you or not.

The manager and assistant manager got what they deserved. Sexual harassment, especially at that level, is NOT something to be taken lightly at any time for any reason. When it gets to the point that he's stalking you like that, and the fact they did nothing about it, they should be banned from working in a supervisory position entirely!
And I'm glad to hear all is well, and that Pet is still in jail. Hopefully he'll get convicted soon.

I'm so happy that life's going great for ya now Karebear! Awesome on the dog too, especially since she's so good with young kids.
As for the girl, yeah, like ya said, she likely just needs time to warm up to you.

Glad the dumbass bosses got the boot. Congrats on getting a dog that took to your family so quickly! And on the new job. The fact that you work with a bunch of guys can be good. Especially since their job is security. I'm sure they'd be happy to beat the living shit out of someone who messed with you.

With the fluff and black tongue it sounds like you have a chow or chow mix.
The managers got exactly what was coming to them. It sounds like the whole manager level with the corporation is going to get a refresher soon about harassment and employee relations.
Posted by: LadyBelle | Friday, July 06, 2012 at 05:33 PM
Congrats on everything! Mostly in here to say black tongue indicates some amount of ChowChow (which goes along with the fluffy and medium size!)

Protective of the family and from what I hear, loyal. :) Looks like the dog my cousin has, who is the sweetest thing in the world and great with their two year old. Had the dog since around the time the baby was born. :)

Yay you! And awesome on the dog; I'm very glad we've got our own huge mutt. He's a shaggy black 4 year-old who doesn't mind when our one year-old tugs his ears. But one night, someone ran up and tried to kick in our basement door... I've never heard him growl that viciously or bark that loud.
Posted by: Legal Minion | Friday, July 06, 2012 at 08:03 PM
@CASHIERBTCH I think Nyx is a mix with Chow Chow in her. She isn't as fluffy as that. This picture here is one of the closest I could find.

Not as shaggy as that, but has the curly tail and pointy ears. And of course, the black tongue. Not saying it's this breed up here, but thats the closest I could find through the thousands of pictures I have looked at.

SOoooo glad to hear everything is going well!!! Also, agree with Cashier, I know a bunch of guys who work security - one who used to work at the Hive with me, another because I frequent a club so often, and I can promise you, they are like a bunch of over-protective big brothers. When I was out at my favorite club with a friend and some dudes literally got up my skirt (I pushed them, told them to fuck off and ran and found my friend who's a bouncer. He did everything he could (even gave me a wristband so I could go back in for free and find the bastards) and promised me that where I was, is literally the safest place for me, and that anyone messes with me, he'll be more than pleased to take care of them for me. Seriously, security guys can be scary, but especially because you work for tank, they're not going to even try and mess when you. Kudos! Good luck! and keep us updated!!!

I'm happy to hear things are going so well, Karebear.

I know this sounds macabre but the good thing about Pet stalking you is that you have a new family member, a better job, great co-workers, an awesome manager and an overall woohoo life now. I am glad it all worked out for you <3
Posted by: Fortune Cookie | Saturday, July 07, 2012 at 02:06 AM
Seeing as how he runs a security business, I'm sure your friend Tank or one of the other guys there knows how to handle firearms. See if they can help you get something for home defense (preferably a shotgun but if that's too heavy/loud for you a handgun would work too).
After my husband and I separated, my 2 year old son and I were living alone for a while. I may not be very strong but my firearms would have evened the playing field if anyone had tried to break in.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, but the fact is that it's our responsibility to defend ourselves (and our children, if you have them). I just hope you live in a state that allows you to own a firearm. California sucks.

Karebear, I'd be very careful about how much you post about the lawsuit before it actually happens. This site is anonymous, yes, but there are ways for opposing parties to figure out who you are and what you write.
Yes and the dog definitely is part chow. The black tongue only comes with that breed. They're good dogs.

Allow me to add my congrats on the new family member, new job, new apartment, managers getting fired and Pet still being in jail. Glad to hear things are much better for you now and that you have a group of supportive people around you (since we RHUers can't be there in person for you). Keep us posted.

Echoing everyone else here in saying I’m glad things are going well for you. I’m glad those two got fired, and that you’re still going on with that lawsuit. May everything continue to go well for you.
Posted by: Lady Red | Saturday, July 07, 2012 at 12:13 PM
So happy that things are looking up for you! The idiots you used to work for got what they deserved. Well, I think they deserved a bit more but hopefully the lawsuit will prevent something like this happening again. Giving the woman you work with flowers as a thank you might bring her around. She is probably used to getting all the attention from the guys and now (she thinks) you have taken it away. Might change her mind. Just glad that you and your children are safe and sounds like you are happy. That is the most important part. Keep us updated!

Black tongue = chow = NOT good with children. Be warned. If you keep the dog, get it obedience-trained IMMEDIATELY.
Posted by: Doug | Saturday, July 07, 2012 at 06:54 PM
I grew up with a dog who was 50% chow and it was a great dog, never showed any sign of aggression. Do get it trained but don't hold its breed against it.
Posted by: Care Plan Pimp | Saturday, July 07, 2012 at 07:38 PM
My cousins dog is chow, but the sweetest thing. AND they have a two year old. It just depends on the personality of the individual dog at times. I've also heard stories of chow fighting off bears to protect their property, so they can be aggressive, but most likely to things that threaten their pack.

So glad to keep getting updates on this, Karebear! And for the new job, new apartment, and new doggie! =3 I hope Pet STAYS in jail for a long, LONG time. Maybe it'll teach him a thing or two about who he can and can't expect to be able to push around and play grab-ass with. Hopefully some big, scary dude named Bubba in the slammer tries the same on him.
As for the new co-worker, she may come around and she may not. You can't be friends with EVERYBODY. (I have a manager who just outright doesn't like me no matter how much I kiss her ass. She's civil outside of work, but when she and I are working together, forget about it.) Though I am going to echo that she may see you as taking away her male attention, as she is no longer the lone female in the office. Try to find out what she's interested in, and attempt to strike up a conversation. She may also just be shy. When I first started my current McJob, I kept mainly to myself and didn't speak to anyone outside of work-related questions and "hello"s, until one day I was on my break and another girl came by and sat down by me. She said, "Everyone tells me you're really quiet and don't talk to anyone, and I thought, 'Well, I'll make her talk!'" She was really nice and funny, asked if I was going to school, how long I'd been with my now-husband, and things like that, and I've been open with everyone ever since. Sometimes one party just needs to break the ice.

yeah I agree with Boho. While it's good to hear updates to know you're doing well and all.
When people speak about things before a court case they can be used during a court case.

Can somebody post a link to Karebear's back-story on all of this? I can't find it and she doesn't have a link on the left side of the page.

@Lamer... I thought I was the only one!! I was totally prepared to ask KB if Tank and his employees only wear black, and drive black vehicles.
KB... I'm so happy that things are going so much better for you. And yay for rescuing a furbaby! I love how she's claimed you guys as her own already.

*SQUEEEEE!!!!* So glad to hear that everything is working well!
Black on a tongue is not ALL Chow. Labradors and some other breeds have black on their tongues. EVERY dog needs obedience and socialization. I'm still glad you took my advice and got a dog. My dog rarely barks, so when she does, it is worth finding out why.
I'm glad you and your lawyer are following through on the lawsuit. Sometimes it takes a kick in the wallet to make people see the light. I hope when all is well and done they see things a LOT differently.
From both of us {{{HUGS}}}
