Hi again from Womens Retail Slave, and I am posting this story as a secondary story from my last NAT story.
However the NAT in question was ME, or at least that's what they thought.
Me and my man were out at a certain sporting goods store that has the same name as slang for men's junk. Anyhoo, I am a slob on my days off, and wear sweat pants, plain or branded tees( think Nike or Adidas) and sneakers. We went out to look for a specific style of hoodie. As we browsed I found a pair of cargo sweat pants FULL TO THE BRIM with defeated sensors. Knowing how pissed I would be, I took the pants with me to the nearest random employee 2 departments over in womens wear, and showed them my find.
This is where the tables turned.
Suddenly employees popped out of everywhere to "greet" and "assist" us with our shopping needs. This continued thru men's sporty sweats onto men's shoes, and then into men's socks/underwear.
As we were headed for the door, we noticed not 1, not 2 but 3 associates just hanging out near the exit door.
Never in a million years ever thought that this would happen to me. I explained to the associate that I talked to, that I too worked in retail and would be upset to find such a bounty of defeated sensors. I showed her where I found them, and thought nothing more about it. In my head I thought maybe she would notify a manager or inspect the area or fitting rooms for other stolen items/tags. I guess she thought that I had stolen things, even thought I was only wearing a tee and some sweats and had no backpack or no way to layer the amount of sensors I found. Not once did a manager approach me to ask the how who's or why, but just stood at the exit waiting for me to leave.
I have never returned to that so aptly named store, and never will again. Not all good deeds go unpunished. I thought about reporting this incident to their manager or headquarters but I would have probably been "rewarded" with some gift card which I would not have wanted to go back to said store to receive the same, worse or no service.
That's all for now, off to find a new support manager for my store!

*sigh*
I guess next time you could look for a manager. Of course, hopefully there won't be a next time you find that many defeated sensors.

I've never had good luck dealing with management at Dick's. Poorly designed, poorly staffed (not the average slave's fault), poorly run. All in all, I prefer Cabela's. I'm sorry you had such a shitty experience too.

Ummm, wouldn't logic dictate (hah, I made a pun!) that if you were a thief you would NOT turn in the evidence-of-theft, thus calling attention to yourself???

They should not have treated you that way and from the sounds of it, I'm surprised they didn't demand to search you and your husband right there in the store.

I'd be contacting corporate so fast that it would make their heads spin!

I think I would have reported it and if they offered to send me a gift card to "reward" me, I would have refused it saying something along the lines of "If this is the way your employees treat customers, why would I want to go back?"

Something similar happened to me when I tried on a pair of pants at a popular women's clothing store. I noticed one of the buttons was missing and, like you, thought it would be nice to notify an employee. I never asked for any sort of reward or discount, but she said, "Well, the most I could give you would be 10% off." I thought about it for a few seconds and said, "No thanks. I'm not too handy with a needle and thread." As I walked away she hissed, "Next time don't damage the merchandise if you don't plan to buy it!" I stopped and looked over my shoulder at her briefly and then walked right out of the store. I haven't been back since.

Is it possible that all the employees suddenly appeared because the manager, behind the scenes, went off on one because of not enough people on the shop floor to deter theft? I ask because a couple of places I've worked, we've had incidents like that - a lot of staff have things to do off the shop floor, then evidence of theft is found, so the manager basically rages at everyone for not being on the shop floor to prevent it, so there's a sudden influx of employees to the shop floor. If the same thing's happened here, they probably were not singling you out - they were annoying everyone.

During the winter-time (sigh... I miss snow...) I usually wear a duster; one of these in black: http://www.sutlers.co.uk/acatalog/dboil2.jpg
It has gotten to the point now that I just ignore the employees following me around the stores. At first I used to find it amusing. Then I was a little upset by it.
Now I'm actually a little saddened by it, because they choose to follow me around, they may actually miss the real thieves.
