Am I stupid? I can't see what's wrong with this sign at all. It asks people to walk around to the opposite side set of escalators and use them instead - where's the fail?

annoyedwaitress

@BookishGirl: People can just walk down it....

SCS

Escalator temporarily stairs.

Skittles

Sorry for the convenience.

 TechTiger

There is an up escalator on either side, and a down escalator in the middle. The down escalator is blocked off; the 'opposite side' is an up escalator.

What do you do when all your customers are stuck on the top floor?

(There probably is another down escalator nearby, but it wasn't funny like that so they didn't include it in the picture)

Chicajojobe

I'm with Bookish Girl. I don't get where the fail is.
I assumed they meant another escalator on the opposite side of the store.
And, yeah, I suppose people could walk down it but they obviously don't want them doing so (probably for safety reasons) if they took the effort to block it off.

Duke of URL

I wouldn't make any of the assumptions that would render this funny.
1) Without knowing why the escalator is out of order, I can't assume that it's safe to walk down. I can come up with several scenarios wherein it would be dangerous to walk down.
2) "Opposite side" of a middle escalator? Clearly they mean escalators on the opposite side of the store. There is no "opposite side" of the middle.

BookishGirl

I got that you could just use them as stairs but I really hate doing that for safety reasons. The ratio of step to riser in escalators is not the same as that for stairs and can cause real problems, particularly for people who are not always steady on their feet (I use a walking stick to get around so this kind of stuff matters to me) as it is quite disorienting. The sign just seemed sensible to me.

 TechTiger

There have been studies done as well that show people have more trouble walking on stopped escalators... they have in their minds that the escalator is supposed to do the moving, and like a placebo, it makes it more difficult.

Nocturnesthesia

I saw an escalator blocked off at the mall a few weeks ago because there was a bunch of ripped clothing stuck in it.
