Kitchy-Bitch here, (Of Manager Pulls a Gun Fame)
This one isn't about me this one is about my girlfriend.
When we first started dating she was working in a really crappy nursing home but she kind of loved it. Anyway on this particular evening I was sleeping the sleep of the just after having worked 6 doubles in a row, when my cell phone goes off.
It's at the other end of the room so I cracked an eyelid at it had had a short argument with myself before hauling myself up and lumbering to retrieve it.
Once in my hand it stops ringing. Halfway to my bed my roommate is POUNDING on my door. I fling open the door to him shouting, "She's been hurt she's been hurt! Oh lord Holly's hurt!"
He's having a full panic attack! I grabbed his cell phone got the pertinent details and ran out the door. I get to her work and find out that an elderly patient snuck up on her while she was unclogging his toilet and knocked her out with a picture frame.
I see cop cars and ambulances so I asked why she called me to pick her up here rather than the hospital. Holly walks up holding a blood soaked rag to her head and tells asks if we can just go.
On the way to the hospital she tells me that her work told her she needed to stay or they would fire her for leaving her shift!
Fortunately a good guy cop jumped in and told the
Administrator that she would be in heap big trouble if she tried that. We get
to the hospital at the same time as a relative of the patient who attacked
Holly.
She is mocking Holly to the admit lady and saying Holly ruined everything. (I'm not sure but I think that if patients are combative and actually hurt people they have to go to different facilities.)
Holly was diagnosed with a concussion and was given a few days off to recover. I planned a nice beach trip on the day she had to go back.
I picked her up after her shift and we were almost there when her cell rings and they fired her!
They said a patient was on the floor and she had just left him there! (Not possible if you know Holly, if she sees an elderly woman that she doesn't know struggling getting into a bathroom stall she immediately identifies herself as a CNA and helps.)
We figure they needed her to work one more shift so it wasn't directly linked to her "accident."

That screams illegal on many levels. I would contact whoever (lawyer, etc etc) and have documentation of what happened.

I agree with cashycat. Make sure everything is written down and get the report from the cops as well. Then contact a lawyer. First rule in anything is to document everything and anything no matter how small.

That cannot be acceptable!

I can determine 2 things from this story.
1) This happened a while ago (years maybe?)
2) This isn't a business where you want to work in the first place.
Either way, I hope she's happy with what she's doing now, and that she's happy to be rid of an awful place like that.

Yep, time to lawyer up.

This sounds like it happened some time ago and as such is likely far past the limitations to file issues with the company.

That is fucked up on several levels. If there isn't a high-security facility available and a patient is overly confused or combative, they generally assign a security guard and/or nurse specifically to keep them from running away or hurting themselves or others.

As others have said, this sounds as though it has happened a while ago, so the statue of limitations may have passed. But if it was recent, your friend may have some legal recourse. My mom is a nurse in a nursing home and they have had situations where they knew when a client was violent or had tendencies to violence and if your friend was not warned before hand she could possibly have a law suit.
In the home where my mom works, the wings with the patients who have been known to have violent out burst the aids, doctors and nurses are always to be in pairs, none of the aids are to be by themselves--due to the fact that some of the patients my be violent. I don't know if this is a state law or what.
Anyways, I hope your friend has recovered and if recent I hope she can sue them for putting her in danger and unlawful termination.

Make sure you find out if it is past the statute of limitations before just assuming it is based on the recommendations of retail workers, not lawyers or paralegals.
Especially with comments on the WalMart dispute, I wouldn't be surprised if outside interests are commenting on this page. They do that on Facebook all the time.
What happened to your girlfriend is bogus and I hope she received unemployment before finding a better job.

This sounds amazingly like something the old management at the nursing home my fiance works at would do? Before that guy was caught money laundering, there were ALL kinds of nutjobs there. And he was told stupid things like that too. Are all nursing homes this crazy?

YES having previously worked for a nursing home this may be recent because nurses & cna can not leave (abandon) their patients. The home might have not wanted her to leave until another nurse could fill in for her because of state rules. Even these situations happen in the higher secured sections of a nursing home from the most unlikely patients. Many places seem to be skimping on employees these days and working what little they have to the bone. Sadly their are some ungrateful family members that just treat staff poorly it is quite common however majority are appreciative and nice. Yes they do get moved to different wings to meet their needs and for safety to other residents if their evaluations require.
