RAEME

$535.50

Potatohead

The writer of the webcomic XKCD. This is a pretty old pic, there's a long and somewhat fascinating story behind it.

It's actually $0.002.

Potatohead

Er..you're right. I can't do math any better than Verizon can, apparently.

Hellraiser

I wonder if you could even cash a check like this. I mean, would the bank accept it?

Raz

Haha....no. There are rules to check writing. The teller would probably give you a blank stare and tell you to rewrite it....unless they are good at math, but most are not sadly.....

Skittles

@Raz that looks to me to be calculus level math not basic math. It's unfare to expect a bank teller to know calculus. Expecting enough math to deal correctly with interest rates on loans and whatnot sure but calculus is a little extreme.

The Last Archimedean

I'm a math major and it took *me* a minute to figure it out.

Michael Chandra

How would this be 535,50? e^(i*pi) is -1. 1/2+1/4+1/8+.... is 1. So it's 0.002-1+1, ain't it?

Chicajojobe

Even if the teller/person at Verizon should be expected to do that level of math. This falls under the category of don't be a know-it-all asshole

I don't go into a deli and ask for 0.45 kilograms of granular sodium chloride cured Bos taurus meat (aka: One pound of corned beef).

Zmidponk

Chicajojobe, it's probably a reference to Verizon being really bad at math. Basically, some guy was quoted a rate of 0.002 cents per kb for broadband from Verizon when connecting from overseas, and he double and triple checked this with Verizon before taking an overseas trip. When he got back, he checked his bill and found he'd been charge 0.002 dollars per kb, so his bill was 100 times larger than what it should have been, according to what he'd been quoted. He contacted Verizon, and spoke to many, many, many, many people there, all of whom simply could not understand what his problem was - that 0.002 cents was different from 0.002 dollars.

If you Google 'Verizon maths', you should find all sorts of stuff about it.

Michael Chandra

Read the link I gave and look for info. -_- That check was never sent.

Raz

I worked at a bank for many years and was terrified when my coworkers would pull out calculators for really basic stuff. The jab at tellers was for that... not calculus.

Jason Thorn

There are actually rules for checks--I learned them in school. If it doesn't conform, legally, it can be refused.
