In my last story I was inspired by "E".
Well, today was the last day of January. Which means it's her last day of work.
So I went to the store to pick up a few necessities and made sure I got in the line where she was working with "D". "E" had a grin on her face the size of Jupiter, where the following conversation ensued.
"D": "Hi, TLA. Since it's E's last day of work, I baked her a cake last night for tonight's party."
Me: "Party?"
"E": "My girlfriend `C' is having a party for me. Today is my last day here."
Me: "I'll miss you a lot."
"E": "I know. Thank you. You're very nice."
"D": "It'll just be the three of us. And then..." [she lowers her voice to a whisper] "...well, you know the rest."
Me: "Yes, `E' and `C' will have some time together since `E' won't be working."
"E": "That's right! And in a few weeks I'll see my parents again!"
My cart is loaded and I have paid by this time.
Me: "Enjoy the party, `E'."
"E": "I will! `D' is good friend to bake a cake!"
I waved to her and smiled at her, for the last time, and was left amazed at how well she was taking her impending death. Once again, my own troubles seemed so minor.

Have a good journey, E. I only hope that when it's our time, we can all meet the reaper with such peace of mind.

And now I'm crying, which is an inappropriate response considering E is so happy to see her parents. I hope she had the best party ever.
