I must admit I'm shocked this worked. But sometimes if you expect the best of people, they'll show it just to live up to the expectations you've set.
When I was in the military, I was told that the way the Russians made elite troops [Spetznaz] was by having a special selector pick out the troops that he thought were promising and tell them they were now Spetznaz and they had a reputation to live up to. They would then move heaven and earth to prove they were worthy of being Spetznaz. Don't know if it's true, but it sounds plausible.
