In the hotel I work for, and most chains I have learned, the housekeeping department has housemen and housekeepers (maids).
The main focus of day shift housemen is stripping rooms; we take all the linen, towels, trash, used toiletries, food, plates, Etc.
The housekeepers (Universally women at my hell) vacuum, wipe down counter, sink and tub, and make up beds. Then the ladies replace towels, complimentary toiletries, plates and utensils (if in a suite.).
Housemen make between minimum and $8.00/hr (senior houseman got me the job.). Housekeepers make $7.75 to $9.00/hr plus tips left for housekeeping at the end of stay ($3.00 + $1.00 per person/day is the going rate.).
Do you think this is equitable, given that a clean room gives the houseman 50% of the work while a pigsty can easily take longer to strip than to make up, (not to mention the things we have to clean *Shudders*)?
