"...umami..." Aaand you lost me. Pretentious marketing speak BS.

Umami is one of the 5 basic tastes along with sour, sweet, bitter and salty. It is a japaneese loan word and Monosodium Glutamate tastes off it.

The bacon cupcake sounds good to me.

I'm allergic to pork and long for the day people aren't bacon obsessed. And I HATE the taste of salty and sweet together. Chocolate dipped pretzels, chocolate with sea salt, etc is just plain gross to me. Just thinking of it makes me want to puke.

So do not want to try it. Wish it would go away.

Oooh, I've had something like this before, but it had a slice of candied bacon and maple fudge on it too. Obesity never tasted so. Damn. FABULOUS.

And expanding on what Greymon said, "umami" is a word you learn on the first day of culinary school. It's pretty basic knowledge for anyone who's into food. Also, makes a great little alliterative tidbit in that specific sentence :D

I'm with SLC. I hate bacon, and am looking forward to the day when it isn't added to everything.
Also "umami" must be a relatively new word, because I spent a year in culinary school, and this is the first time that I've encountered it.

I know what it's intended to mean. And while the word itself was invented over a hundred years ago, it's just recently (in the last 20 at most, more like 10) started to be used at all, and is usually used as a meaningless marketing buzzword... like above.

Every fucking time I hear or see that fucking word 'umami' I want to cut a bitch! It is the same fucking thing as savory it is not a new flavor nor has it just been fucking discovered! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

^-- my point in a somewhat noisier nutshell. :D

What I'm hearing is, "umami" is to food as "entropy" or "liminal space" is to art. You say it when you want to sound important and learned, but really you just end up sounding like a pretentious dick.

"Pretentious marketing speak BS." as I originally said. :)

I just have to say, I LOVE sweet and salty together. My favorite candy is chocolate covered potato chips! A lot of time I will also eat dessert first because the sweetness makes me want to then eat something salty. So if I eat salty dinner first, then eat dessert, then I'll have to eat even more salty things afterwards. Best to just eat dessert first. Damn my salt tooth.
