Wait - if Alex was right and the teacher was wrong, he shouldn't get detention. I hope Alex's parents fought this and told the teacher they didn't know if their son should be taught by a flaming moron.

Yeaaaah I would laugh at the teacher. If I could stop laughing before they got me a calming drink, I would inform said teacher that only morons accepted things without question, especially if the things being said were wrong. I would tell the teacher that my son is encouraged to continue to speak up when things are wrong, and that if the teacher wanted to press the issue, we could continue fighting the punishment along the chain of command until a satisfactory resolution was met...
