I remember these signs being everywhere as a kid, but they applied to adults as well. You break it, you pay for it. But I also remember "No running indoors anywhere, ever, unless there's a fire." And "If it doesn't belong to you, don't touch it." And "It's rude to demand someone buy you a thing you want." Well, it was rude to "want" anything.

My parents (and their parents) lived through the Depression in the 30's, and WW2 in the UK. So for us kids, the answer always was: "You have more than 2 changes of clothes, shoes that fit, a roof over your head, and food on the table."
