I got rather frustrated with a supervisor once that was commenting how slovenly some of the workers looked wearing worn out shirts/pants and ratty smocks.
We all tried to explain to her that some of us can't afford new things when they wear out because a minimum wage job that only give out an average of 20 hours a week doesn't even cover monthly bills, much less new uniforms.
She didn't get it. She kept saying, "It's only a $30 pair of pants and a $10 shirt! What's the big deal?"
Well... that's pretty much a day's wages after taxes... that's the big deal.
And then there's those of us who just don't care how we look. If we got paid and treated decently then maybe we'd put an effort into our appearance.
