Of course I know it happens, but I just don't understand how someone can forget to put the pump back.


I'd say that means the pump wasn't anchored right to begin with--fuel lines IIRC are supposed to have a breakaway coupling for exactly that sort of incident.


BPFH, that one does... and as with a 1000$ TV blowing to protect a 5 cent fuse, it didn't break away. (If you zoom into the picture, it's right at the left edge of the yellow part at the top of the pump)

The handle is supposed to have a breakaway nozzle too, and it looks like that one failed to fail as well.
