We recently changed our opening times, and we're open two hours longer now. You would think customers would be happy about that, but about a month ago an elderly couple came in. Apparently they had hurried to make it on time and became absolutely livid when they saw the signs that we're open longer now.
The woman was berating me for an eternity while the man was giving me a death stare. They eventually left without buying anything. Half an hour later, the woman comes back alone because she wasn't finished complaining.
While I am expected to be polite and helpful, my boss - who used to work the cash desk for a long time - says we're allowed to "educate our customers on proper etiquette." Basically the second a customer starts being insulting, we're totally allowed to deny them services and my boss backs us up everytime. Great guy, has no patience and doesn't give a single fuck anymore.
So far, the woman has been rude and disrespectful, but not outright insulting and I am still trying not to escalate the situation by APOLOGISING that we didn't hang up enough signs in advance for them to see that we would make our business hours longer.
This lady finally hits me with the line, "It is unbelievable that you're too damn stupid to know your own business hours."
I give her my most gleeful and happy smile because everyone heard that she just called me stupid and now I can finally speak freely.
Me: "Madame, I know our business hours very well. It's not me who is acting stupid right now. If you do not agree with our opening hours you are welcome to go to a store that closes earlier."
Her eyes widen in disbelief. She gives me the, "We're never coming back here yadayada talk to your manager," talk.
Me: "Frankly, I don't care if you shop here. Let me give you my manager's business card so he can tell you personally how little he cares."
She left without another word and according to my manager, they never called. I've had a lot of arguments with customers but this takes the cake as the most pointless discussion I've ever had.
