On 9/11 I was working for a toy catalog company in northern Virginia.
The guy who was supposed to do the weekly projections/purchases had a dentist appointment. The planes hit the towers, and he called in to say he was going to go home to his family instead of coming into work (it was normally a 45 min commute for him).
The boss told me to do the projections. I ran the numbers and then scaled everything back by 20%.
He got pissed and asked me why.
I informed him that we were about to go to war with somebody and people weren't going to buy expensive toys.
He told me to run the numbers again.
He also repeatedly told several female employees who were trying to get in touch with their husbands, who worked at the Pentagon, to, "Hang up the damned phones and get back to work."
He was ignored, which only enraged him further.
Then when everyone was eating lunch he took the cables from all of the computers so people wouldn't be able to get online for updates on the towers or the Pentagon. He damn near got lynched.
I don't know why they didn't finish the job, since by that time, his callous comments had pissed me off so badly that I would have testified that they were in a remote part of Peru when he mysteriously died.
Everyone to a man/woman told him that they were not going to stay late on this day. Everyone left the office to line up at the time clock to the sound of his enraged screaming that nobody had a work ethic anymore.
This was all on top of him using speakerphone while in an open office (so we all had to overhear his every conversation), smoking constantly in the office, and trying to pressure everyone to work late every day (so he wouldn't have to go home and confront his cheating wife).
