Grocery Hell: Managers Act Like Customer Service Isn't Their Job

Managerfromhell2Hey RHU!

Slave With No Name here after what seems like an eternity. Unfortunately I haven't submitted in a while because of a lot of personal issues but I'm back and back with plenty of stories.

First I'll start off with a quick summary of what has been going on in The Kingdom of Hell.

It fucking sucks. The store is falling apart due to shitty management. A while ago they transferred our assistant manager who pretty much made up the work our manager lacked. Our new assistant manager is probably just as worse as my manager.

The main problem?

They don't want to deal with customers.

Me being in customer service I always get a customer asking to speak to the manager. Sometimes I know the reason (they don't like the policy I explained, they want to make a complaint about something...etc) or they'll just come up to me and ask to speak to them. I don't ask questions and I just page whoever is there.

I page them and what do they do?

They call me.

From the managers office.

Which is behind a door about 15 feet away from customer service.

Carolanne 002The assistant manager is more of an asshole than my manager and will ask, "Yeah? What do you want?"

I've learned to be a complete bitch and all I say is, "A customer would like to speak to you." and I hang up. It gets the job done but unfortunately it takes him about 5-10 minutes to come out of the managers office.

Now some of you may be thinking "Well Slave, he's probably doing some paperwork or some mundane task a manager is required to do." Which you may be right about and I totally understand that.

But me, being in customer service if I'm in the middle of doing something, no matter how important it is I have to stop what I'm doing and help the customer. That is my job and I fully accept that. To me though, a part of a manager's job is customer service. That's what they signed up for. I don't understand why they don't want to deal with people when they CHOSE to be a manager of a store! I just don't get it.

And to paint you a story of how much an asshat my assistant manager is; a customer had a question about a frozen item. I saw the frozen manager earlier, I rang him up about 20 minutes before hand for a sports drink, in full uniform and chatted for a bit about our day and he went on his merry way INTO the store.

Anyway I paged the frozen manager to dial my extension to help the customer and about 30 seconds later my assistant manager called (from his office...no surprise there) and asked, "In what world are you living in that frozen food manager is working today?"

Carolanne 009I was speechless. I saw him. I rang him up. I talked to him. HE WAS IN HIS UNIFORM. All of which I explained because asshat assistant manager said, "Well maybe he's just doing his personal shopping."

I thought to myself, "Well considering the guy lives about a half hour away I doubt that." But I ignored his shittiness and told him a customer needed help with a frozen item. Assistant manager comes out of his office and who also comes up to me?

The frozen food manager.

Never got an apology over the condescending and unnecessary remark. In the end he's a huge tool and I just deal with it.

Oh and corporate's new rule?

They don't want complaints in the main office so whatever the customer wants, give them, including customers who like to scam. But they don't understand why they're losing out on money because of this. So they cut allotted hours in each store leaving us with barely any help leading to customers complaining about it. And they want to complain to corporate no matter what I do for them.

It's one sick circle and I'm in the middle of it.

Well guys thank you for letting me rant and vent. I promise I'm not going to leave again, I love this community and everyone who posts. It gives me hope that I'm not the only slave out there.

Until next time,

--Slave With No Name

Welcome to retail. Corporate live in their own little world, like mini-bankers.

That's because corporate have probably never done an honest day's work in their lives. They just sit in their offices all day long and make stupid policies.

Skittles

Why not tell every angered customer that policy when they come up to complain? Sooner or later that policy will change.

Humor_Me

Fuck policy, I'd point them straight to the office door. "Just go and knock on that door. He can help you in there!" : - D

I firmly believe that 'I want to talk to a supervisor / manager' without a reason better than 'I wanna!' should be answered by a good punch in the head.

I think Humor_Me's policy is more likely to get implemented, though...
