Would You Like A Bag For Your Receipt?
The other day, a man came in and bought 51 $5 Starbucks cards. The receipt is taller than I am.

I wonder how he paid for those. Makes me wonder if this is related to the recent Starbucks hack...

More than likely not. There are a lot of businesses that will get those in bulk to give out to their employees. At least it's not as bad as the CVS and Walgreen's receipts. Those things are just ridiculous.

Lots of uses for a stack of low value gift cards. My friends kids have been getting $5 gift cards to Starbucks/Itunes/Chapters in loot bags lately. It's a lot better than the old crappy dollar store stuff that just gets tossed out and way easier for the moms too.

@Sandman- oh I know many businesses do give out small giftcards as incentives. But... most places (Starbucks among them) have programs to order those cards rather than go in to a store. You can pay for them online, have them shipped to you, and have a much smaller disruption to your normal activities and no disruption to a store's daily activities. Also, the number purchased is circumspect: 51. That's just awkward.
And since the way the hack worked was to access someone's Starbucks account that had auto-reload and purchase gift cards with it and then sell those gift cards for less than they were valued at online, I can see this being related.
