Newbie Narratives: Trainer Never Shows

02 NEWBIEFrom GreatEvilBetty, TalesFromRetail

It was my first day on the job, at my first job that I ever had. I was 17, fresh out of high school, and eager to make money. I was working at a department store in a large mall in a major city, first day was to be a Sunday. They closed early on Sundays, but as this was in the Autumn and the Holiday season was around the corner things were starting to ramp up.

I come into my first working shift, selling shoes, and learn a bit from the department manager and the earlier shift that overlaps slightly. Manager takes off, saying that "Mark" will be in soon to train me and teach me to close. I am anxious, but my co-workers are cool.

Time passes and Mark doesn't show up. The early shift seems nervous to leave me alone, but because this is retail and because they don't give a fuck(it's also commission so competitive) they take off anyways. Leaving me there by myself, for about 2 hours.

I went through basic POS training so I knew how to ring people up. I didn't know the layout of the stockroom so it took me 10 minutes to find a shoe size for customers, I just kept apologizing, and I called for help from one of the other departments.

I end up doing a good job, the "petite section" workers were very helpful, showed me how to close out the registers, and I cleaned up the best I could.

Mark never showed up and was fired a few days later. I found out shortly afterwards that I was specifically hired to replace him because he was pulling this shit all the time. Never did meet him.

I wasn't even shown how to close at Gamestop, until I came in one day and was gonna be left alone for hours until close - this was also the day before Fifa 17 was released, so lots of customers asking questions. (Story is on this site) The coworker that was still there did call someone else to pop in towards the end of the day to help me close.

Also, fuck comission. It's dumb.

Commission is kind of the reverse of tipping, and one needs to die in a fire made of the other one. I don't even care which. It makes every transaction even more annoying. I know what I want. I don't want all the other crap you're trying to sell me. I don't care if you get paid more if I buy more; that's your problem, not mine.

I absolutely hate commission, it's totally unfair. Especially when customers deliberately avoid certain workers so they don't get commission.
