500 dollar bills were no longer to be distributed sometime in 1969. Yes my dad had one when paid for working on a house. He had to show it off. Look a $500 bill. You can still turn one into a bank but they remove it from circulation. An older person thinking they can still get a $500 bill is not surprising.

It's been almost 50 years since they were available bills, and are collector's items worth between 600 and 1800 for the common ones, so the likelihood that he's ever actually seen one is vanishingly small. Maybe he was thinking of Monopoly...

It was the stopped being available in the 1800's that I couldn't take. I would sell it to a collector if I had one now. No way its going to a bank. My mother still has a couple redeemable for gold bills, not that you can anymore.

The site that my short attention span found said some were even more than $1800, that was just the normal ones. Those might be even more.

I have a couple of 10$ silver certificates around somewhere, and they're gorgeous. They're only worth maybe 12$ or so, but they're actually GREEN greenbacks. All the current stuff looks gray to me. (Although I am colorblind, so...)
