Dumbass Customers: "I need a modem!"
From heroiclord, Tales From Retail:
So, this didn’t happen to me, but rather my coworker. This is posted with his permission, and told in the first person.
So I get a call specifically for my position, and this Guy (G) is on the other end of the line.
Me: hello, what can I do for you today.
G: hello, so I need a modem. Do you have any in stock?
Me: yeah, let me go and check the models and prices. (I go and check the prices and time passes). Yeah, the prices are between $60 - $80 depending on the model.
G: really? Wow that’s weird. Usually they are much more expensive than that. Oh, and I also need McAffee antivirus on there and my data transferred over to my new modem.
Me: (????). Sir, I don’t think we are thinking about the same thing. The modem you need, do you plug it into the wall with a coaxial cable?
G: yes
Me: the cable that you connect to the tv?
G: yes
Me: the modem is what you connect to your computer (emphasis on computer) to get internet.
G: yes, that is what I need. And you can put McAffee antivirus on there, right?
Me: (dying on the inside). I think it would be best if you came and so that we can talk.
The guy came in and he was talking about a desktop computer, but he specifically referred to it as a modem. Don’t know how he got that idea, but it was interesting to say the least.
People have no idea at all what 'the magic box that makes porn happen' is called. The modem, the hard drive, 'windows', 'compaq (Yeah, it's been a while...) / Dell / HP" (As in 'The HP won't boot up.' "Ok, does your computer beep or anything?" 'I don't have a computer, I have an HP, dumbass!') "the monitor", "de ting"...
