Toxic Managers: Your Availability Is What We Tell You It Is
Got fired on my first week. I was in high school, and during the interview I told the manager interviewing me that I could only work 20 hours a week. I didn't mind 8 hour days on weekends but during the week I couldn't do it.
As soon as training ends, the schedule comes out and I'm scheduled to work 39.5 hours with several 8 hour shifts on weekdays after school.
I went into the manager's office and told him that I couldn't do it, that it was against my availability.
He said, "This is why we hired you. Your availability is what we tell you it is. Either do it or you're fired."
Well... That was that. I gave him a sweet smile, thanked him for wasting my time, and walked out.

I don't get how they can get away with crap like that!

Generally speaking, they get away with it because nobody files complaints.
If it's in state that requires work permits for underage high school students, the guy could find himself unable to hire high school students any more (and grads generally won't work for the same shit wages with unemployment as low as it is). Minimum wage jobs are a dime a dozen.

They don't get away with it if the employees are union.

I had a manager a little like that, told her my times and my availability on those days and she tried to ignore it completely.
It was a nail in my partnership's coffin at the time (amongst other things but this really was a big nail) and took me months to find out I was allowed to change everything around to what I'd originally asked for. I loathe people like this. Makes my fist itch.
