I used to work in an art gallery, and we had a mailing list that was built through direct contact and used to send monthly postcards about upcoming gallery shows. You either had to walk in the door and physically write down your address, or call and talk to an employee who would input the address into the database. We never bought any outside lists, nor did we pull names/addresses from elsewhere. Sometimes we got people asking to be removed from the list and we never argued, always removed their names/addresses as requested. This one lady must have lived in the neighborhood because I'd see her walking around on the regular. One day I was working alone and she came in the gallery, almost screeching everything she said at the top of her lungs:
Crazy Lady: (Holding a gallery postcard from 4 months prior) "I demand you remove me from your mailing list! I never asked to be sent this mail! This is unacceptable!"
Me: "Yes ma'am, of course! If you'll give me the postcard or your name and address and I'll make sure it's deleted from the mailing list."
CL: "You should know who I am!" (Turns and walks out, still holding the postcard...)
Two months later I am working alone again and in walks Crazy Lady once more.
CL: (Holding same exact postcard from previous encounter, so now it's six months old) "I demand you remove me from your mailing list! I never asked to be sent this mail!"
Me: "Yes ma'am, of course, but please give me your name so I can be sure to remove the right person from the list."
CL: "You should know who I am!"
Me: (Interrupting her) "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I don't know you by name! Please just write down your name and I'll take you off the list."
CL: "Give me a post-it note!"
I reach into the desk drawer and pull out a pad of post-its and a pen.
CL: "Tear off the top post-it, I will not touch that!"
CL: "I have my own pen!"
I wait as she writes her name and address down, harumphing to her self the whole time. Once finished, she twirls on her
heal heel and marches out of the gallery.
As soon as she left I checked the database and sure enough, her address was removed almost 6 months ago with a note from my boss: "Crazy lady finally gave me her name, don't mail her anything ever again."
